Ardtoe Marine Laboratory operates the largest privately owned marine research facilities in the UK and, probably, in Europe. Its facilities include :

 

  • 120m3/hr seawater supply, filtered to 10 microns and UV treated
  • Multi-replicated tanks from 3 liters to 160 cubic meters
  • Aeration and oxygenation
  • Temperature and photoperiod controlled rooms
  • Automated tank monitoring and alarm system
  • Automated back-up generators

Biological Stocks

  • Captive finfish breeding stocks include turbot, sole, cod, haddock, halibut and ballan, goldsinny and corkwing wrasse
  • Breeding stocks of shellfish currently include Pacific and native oysters, and sea urchins
  • Stocks of juveniles of all the above species are routinely available
  • Master cultures of various species of marine micro and macroalgae
  • Rotifer master cultures
